Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that appears early in childhood, usually before school age, and affects speech, personal development, learning, social, and emotional development. Children with ASD often have difficulty with language, attention, memory, problem solving, or social interaction.
Other common neurodevelopmental disorders include ADHD, learning disorders (such as dyslexia), and intellectual disability.
In the United States, an estimated 1 in 36 children under the age of 8 have ASD, with boys four times more likely than girls. The number of diagnoses is increasing due to improvements in diagnostic criteria and public awareness.

There are various individual diagnoses within the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), such as Classic Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). Children with autism often show early signs, so parents need to monitor their child's changes to implement early interventions. Parents can observe their children in the following areas:

𝑬𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔:
- The child avoids eye contact from a young age and does not look directly at others when conversing.
- Unable to distinguish between strangers and familiar people.
- Does not show affection or attachment to their mother, does not follow the mother, or express joy when parents return home.
- In school, the child does not like playing with peers and cannot recognize whether the teacher is scolding or praising them.

- May not sleep or sleeps very little at night yet remains energetic during the day.
- Shows no fear of danger and may even self-harm, such as hitting their head, scratching, or pulling out hair.
- Often exhibits unusual movements, such as delayed walking due to hypotonia or abnormal gestures, including grimacing, flapping hands, rocking, or headbanging.
